‘There is an evening coming in…’

Friday 21st March, 2025 @ 7.00pm…In the year of the 70th anniversary of Philip Larkin’s second, notable verse collection, The Less Deceived, Stewart presents a lecture and celebratory assessment of Hull’s most famous librarian, echoing Clive James’s observation, ’He faces the worst on our behalf and brings it to order’.

Stewart first came across Larkin’s poetry in a bookshop in his native Liverpool in the early 1970’s, around the corner from The Cavern, and after, to quote from a Larkin’s infamous, ‘Annus Mirabilis’, poem, ‘the Beatles’ first LP’.   He will be offering his insights on Larkin’s technical mastery alongside the poet’s, at times, bleak perspective of the human condition.

The venue is St. Ninian’s & St. Andrew’s United Reformed Church, 285 Victoria Avenue, Kingston upon Hull. HU5 3EB.    Tickets cost £8/£5 (concessions) available on the door or online (subject to eventbrite fee).

The event is presented in association with the Philip Larkin Society, and the chair of The Trustees, Professor Graham Chesters will kindly be providing various Larkin artefacts to view.   The evening will also feature performances by students from Wyke Sixth Form.
